Start by taking some quiet time to dream away from all the noise and buzz. This is the key first step. Your dreams will become your goals so take some time to dream about what you want to achieve.

Next, ask yourself, “What ONE dream gives me a sense of achievement and success – and gets me really excited?” More income? Landing a big client? Finding a new job? A new home? Taking a vacation? You get the idea.

Now, create a mental picture of your dream. Allow yourself to really feel the satisfaction and happiness you’ll get from achieving it.

This clear mental picture – your visualization – together with these strong feelings, creates the focus for setting your goal.

So start dreaming for 2021 … then turn your dream into a goal with Step 2.

Step 2 – SET

There is no substitute for tried and true fundamentals of clear goal setting, systematic measurement against these goals, and rewards and recognition when goals are achieved.

You chose your dream for 2021 in Step 1. Let’s turn your dream into a goal with these actions in Step 2, Set.

State your goal out loud. Be as specific as you can. For example, if your goal is more income, state exactly how much more:I will increase my annual income by X thousand dollars.”

Time your goal. When will you achieve it? State the exact date: “I will increase my annual income by X thousand dollars by X date, 2021.

Write your goal just as you’ve stated it. When you put your goal in writing, you make it more memorable by internalizing it.

View your goal. Post your goal where you’ll be sure to view it every day. Make it visible, and make time to look at it regularly and often.

Your dream has now become a goal. You’re ready to take action to achieve it with Step 3, Act.

Step 3 – ACT

Just do it to achieve your goal

Achieving goals is simple. Once you decide on what you want, put on the blinders and move full speed ahead. Don’t listen to anyone else. They’ll only tell you why something can’t be done.

Now it’s time for action. Without action, your goal is just a wish.

Step 3 Act drives goal achievement. And it’s this step that can be the most challenging … it’s always easier to think and plan than it is to act.

Try these 3 tips to help you act on your goal …

Take Action

Nike has this right: Just do it! Do what? Do whatever action or actions help you achieve your goal. For example, if your goal is to find a new job, updating your resume and starting an active search of job boards are 2 positive actions. If your goal is to improve your putting, getting to the putting green X times a week is a positive action.

Check Action

You want to check your actions to make sure they’re on track toward your goal. How will you know? Ask yourself this question, Will this action move me closer to my goal?” If the answer is no, stop. Shift to one that does. Putting this question in writing and making it as visible as your goal will keep your actions on track and focused.

Keep Acting and Checking

Taking the right actions consistently and repeating them again and again will achieve your goal… it really is that simple.

Use whatever works best for you. Be sure it’s visible and includes:
